Hello everyone. I'm new to the world of whippets, but both my boyfriend and myself have always wanted one... and finally, we're in the position to (hopefully subject to homecheck) foster or adopt one of our own.
We're not dog novices – we've a much-loved staffie girl – but were wondering if there are any really good whippet-related resources out there? Books you would recommend, or websites to check out?
We're particularly interested in anything that covers sighthound behaviours, and any particular needs we need to be aware of to make sure our potential whippie is throughly spoilt, sorry, well catered for.
Thanks very much in advance...
ps. I've already already ordered ' The Whippet: An Authoritative Look at the Breed's Past, Present, and Future (Kennel Club Classics)' from Amazon, alongside Bradshaw's 'In Defence of Dogs' (any excuse, been wanting to buy it for ages!).

Hi tigertiger. Staffies are lovely but it's great news you're going to become whippet slaves too. Others will know much more about the best books specifically about whippets but I'm so glad you've got 'In Defence of Dogs'. It's such a good scientifically based book and Bradshaw seems such a terrific man too. Good luck with your quest - our rescue whippet has added immeasurably to our lives - and to our first whippet's life (been with us since a puppy).

Thanks Jane – we've done lots of admiring, and lots of thinking, and as long as Maddie is happy, we can't wait to welcome a whippet to the family. We both love how they look, how they run, and from what we've heard about their gentle, chilled nature, think it would be a great fit with our current set up. Perhaps unusually for a staffie, Maddie is very, very chilled once she's home, so we think her new friend will need to share her love of cuddles, lazing, sunspots and snoozing. That said, she doesn't half like a run around in the park, so hopefully it should be a good, if slightly unusual, fit...!

I have a male staffy with a little lurcher bitch and they get on great. Both share dishes, beds etc. Good luck with your new whippet!

gjb – that's good to know, and just what we hope will happen – thank you! I have talked to whippet and lurcher owners who have found the mix to be a good one especially if the staffie is older (ours is 6 and carries on like a right old Nana when she's not in the park, where she reverts to puppyhood!), so we shall keep our fingers crossed and wait and see! Do you have any pictures? I'd love to see your two...
