I'm foster mummy to these two guys. Nigel on the left [blue] and Brian [fawn]. This is my second day and already their personalities are really coming out ! On the whole they are good guys, but sometimes are like naughty kids, egging each other on. There is still much for me to learn I am sure, but what is certain is that the pair of them don't have a wicked bone in their body, are fairly relaxed but do enjoy to stretch their legs. They do have to be rehomed together, and it is apparant that Nigel is lost without Brian and that Brian has a bit of a stubborn streak!! More information as I learn more... scrupleswhippetrescue.co.uk/category/dogs-looking-for-homes/This is their original thread on the Scruples web site when they first arrived from their owner [not their fault, just a change in circumstances] Attachments:

another piccy of the cute boys......... patiently waiting for their tea! Brian has a bit of a wound from charging through some hedgerow, so will be undergoing surgery tomorrow to stitch it up as its not for healing on its own.... whilst under, the vet is going to do some poking and prodding to see how his sponylosis is - or isn't; as this is a 2nd opinion. Its less painful whilst asleep so seems a good opportunity to hopefully get a better diagnosis..... he certainly doesnt run around like he has any problems! so....... how to entertain Brian for the best part of the day whilst his bessy pal is away ?!? well brian is at the vets, getting all stitched up and i should be picking him up later today. yesterday when i took brian for his assessment, i left nigel with my partner. [30mins] he said nigel never stopped whining etc !! so i was not looking forward to a full 6 or 7 hours of that today. so, dropped brian off. nigel came with me whilst i got bits of shopping.... slept in the car!! came home gave him a scooby snack and he is now fast asleep on the couch.. ;D i think he is missing brian, but seems to be coping quite well as i am sure they havent been apart for any length of time.

well brian is home. feeling a bit sorry for himself, but too be honest i am not surprised as it turned out to be a bit larger an operation that originally thought. the hole he had just wasnt healing hence the decision to operate, and the vet felt it was just a couple of stitches to pull it together..... once opened up it had gone deeper and needed a complete flush out with internal and external stitches, so he has a war wound with a drain in it. we go back on monday. plus he did a good manipulation whilst brian was 'under' [as its painful when awake] and agrees that brian does have some stiffening of the spine, that could be attributed to spondylosis/doggy arthritus - that said only an xray would truly confirm. brian is on supplement containing glucosame and this seems to be all he is needing at the moment. finally as if that wasnt enough, he got a bit of a teeth clean with some of the large chunks of tartar stripped off [not a full descale as vet didnt want to create/release any possible microbes etc into his bloodstream with his wound]. so he is keeping himself to himself a bit, sporting a lovely blue soft collar to stop him worrying the drain wound - very street cred NOT !

brian is feeling much better today and is wanting a bit more company today. he doesnt appear to be in any obvious pain, i think its more 'annoying' than anything. the drain is working so cleaning up spotting - only when hes too active...... fortunately whippets like to sleep alot! he's not allowed any exercise, so runs are out for about 10 days. both are bright intelligent boys and learn quickly the house routine. both have been clean in the house. a reluctance to stop outside at first, so i was worried that they hadnt had any chance to empty bowels, but now toileting seems more relaxed. walking on the lead they still have a tendancy to pull. nigel is the stronger one in this regard. they are getting better! well brian has today had the drain out. and hopefully the stitches come out on thursday - everything healing well. all in all you can say he has been a perfect patient - apart from deciding on saturday night to chase the cat in the garden, jump up at the pergola and generally over exert himself as he is meant to be resting!! oh yes, and apart from deciding that the ONE fly in the house is easy game and constantly running round, twitching, staring, pacing etc etc; apart from physically hugging him to keep him still [lasted all of 5 mins] he was off again !! so maybe not the PERFECT patient, but good none the less. we had fireworks [distant] on saturday night - both ignored. then sunday night right out by the house - both ignored !! i took them out for a late walk and a few noises in the distance and they both ignored them. so i think its pretty safe to say that they are ok with fireworks. lead work is getting better with less pulling - but brian is defo a character and if he can suddenly go deaf and ignore you he will; stubborn streak perhaps !?! there is no doubt they are both affectionate, nigel is a bit more of a cuddle monster and the other day jumped on my lap and fell asleep as a babe in arms....... couldnt get the camera as my arms were busy!! more in a few days............ if anyone wants to Adopt these guys then get in touch with Scruples. im happy to meet up for a pre-meet or a walk if Scruples agree.

brian.... stitches not out, being being over-optimistic - should be next wednesday. all healing well. brian's character is showing a bit more now, probably as the operation has albut disappeared so he is not feeling as fed up. i think he is a more reserved in affection compared to nigel. whereas nigel is pretty much a 'hussy' - brian is definately less giving. that said his tail is getting waggier and he more inclined to stick around for a bit of affection. he has always been a bit more distant - preferring to get the obligatory scratch of the ears/back etc; but then goes off to his own space. he's one that definately can't be rushed. he is more alert of the two; will always greet the front door opening with a bark - not aggressive just a reaction. he is also the one that will investigate the work top or try to see whats on your plate !! good at 'leaving' though when told. in fact both boys are good when you are eating; they may have the odd sniff then look expectantly but usually settle down quickly when they know its not their turn for food. he has a habit of scratching/toeing the door if you have closed it and he think hes missing something - again not overly destructive, just a gentle prod. he does stop if you tell him. if he is outside, he will do the same to the back door and will give the occasional bark - i usually say no, then ignore and only let him in once he has stopped. of the two he is probably the one who could be an escape artist if you left him for too long, especially if he has known that there has been a cat etc roaming around., you can see his brain working out where the cat may be!! onto nigel........... he really is a hussy........ a doggy gigolo he's anyones for a hug, tickle, ear scratch - and scratch his back and he will almost fall over with stretching to get more of it!! both of them are not content with having the 3 seater couch to themselves; they have now taken over the chair and all but pushed me off my spot on the 2 seater....... you can guarantee that Nigel will want to squeeze on where ever you are; and trust me if you dont hold your space you will be pushed off!! nigel comes across as a confident dog, but i think there is still a need for ressurance, and he will follow you to check where you are - he will go back and settle once he has checked [at first though it was a bit of a squeeze in the toilet for me and 2 dogs!]. nigel will sleep for england and relax, whereas brian always seem to have a bit of nervous energy and never quite wants to shut his eyes; especially if a fly is around. both boys are GREAT in the car; taking in turns to lie down and settle. both boys eat well and are not fussy. no food aggression, and you can approach or remove their food bowl if necessary. today i gave them some carrot...... so funny! they both ran off as if it was a bone. brian nibbled at it with his front teeth, nigel just crunched and wolfed it down. nigel is a bit quicker at eating but doesnt intrude on brian till he's finished.
